Theory X

Theory X supervisors cannot trust any employee. They reveal this to their support staff constantly and direct them to control their subordinates. A Theory X manager can be said to be an impediment to employee morale and productivity. They believe people have an inherent dislike for work and will avoid it whenever possible. They must be coerced, controlled, directed, or threatened with punishment in order to get them to achieve the organizational objectives. People prefer to be directed, do not want responsibility, and have little or no ambition.

Theory Y

Work is as natural as play and rest. People will exercise self-direction if they are committed to the objectives (they are NOT lazy). People learn to accept and seek responsibility. Creativity, ingenuity, and imagination are widely distributed among the population. People are capable of using these abilities to solve an organizational problem. People have potential.

The Theory X manager is a dying breed (although it has to be said he’s not yet extinct).

Theory Y has already proved its worth.

1. If your subordinate has a great idea, promote it; don’t steal it! You’ll be praised for fostering bright and motivated workers.

2. Don’t keep your employees in the dark. The more they know, the more they can contribute.

3. When you have hurt someone don’t be ashamed to say sorry. If you’re wrong, admit it. Trying to cover up mistakes only leads to lying and looking like a big jerk. Think of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Of course, if you’re “The Boss”, you think you’re untouchable. Granted, you answer to someone else and not to your support staff, but think about how you would want your boss to treat you if they’re not already treating you like that.

4. Your people are only as good as you train them. Spend the time to mentor your staff and guide them along on their career.

5. Appreciate and support the people that work for you. If they know you’re there for them and see what you do for them, you will gain immeasurable results from them.

6. Threatening employees also works. The work gets done but not before the employees start on antidepressants to deal with the pressure they are under. Think of productivity under medication – will it be high or low?

7. A good leader knows what it takes to succeed. Most of it is contained in this list of commandments. If people are respected and given the freedom to do their jobs, managers will receive unending rewards from it. It’s possible to glean enormous results with very little.

Disclaimer: The above post is not originally written by me. But I got so much impressed by that and thought I will post here too so that I can read it everytime I login. Also I can keep on adding to it from contributions from other places.

Hundreds of blogs are already written about ‘Om Shanthi Om’. I don’t want to add another one to that list describing SRK’s 6-pack or the silly story (or lack of story) of the movie. However, I have a point to make – it is about one thing in the movie which I disliked to the core. It is about Shabana Asmi.

I just could not believe when she uttered the dialogue, “I am here to protest against the award function since they are doing this show after displacing a slum”. In the context of the movie, that dialogue is not a serious one. It is coming at a place when Farah Khan is taking a pot on all the Who is Who of Bollywood, and this too counted along with that. I would imagine that Shabana was aware of how she (and what she is saying) is going to be presented on the screen. If that is the case, what she did is apalling! How on earth she can take that as a funny thing? If she is projecting what she doing in real life (mind you, not reel life for all others who are presented along with her) as a funny activity, then how the public can take it as serious in future? Next time when she does a protest for either poor or Narmadha or whatever, how do you think people can believe her?

I sign this off as one of the most disgraceful thing one could have ever done or said about their work. Yeah, it is okay to see the funny side of everything and all, but when you have to be serious, you have to be serious. And never make fun of something that you seriously do.

Ellappugazhum…AR Rahman

It is an apt title track for a Vijay movie. Sung by Rahman himself with a lot of energy and vigour. It has a catchy rythm and will set your foot tapping on the first listening itself. Orchastration and sound engineering is perfect, as you would always expect. However, by the time we reach the ‘charanam’, a kind of ‘deja vu’ feeling is there. Haven’t we heard this sometime last year in ‘Ah Aaah’ (again title track there). There are some shades of the ‘Ballelikkaa’ also. Neverthless, a very good effort which is enough to set the dance floor on the move and satisfy Vijay fans!

Kelaamal..Sriram Parthasarathy, Saindhavi

I got addicted to Sriram Parthasarathy’s rendition of ‘Nee thane en desiya geetham’ (Parthaale Paravasam) and, after that, always wondered why he did not come to limelight after such an excellent effort. Here, he is back, but not with such a great impact. Probably the reason is the composition itself. Not such a strong contenter for a superhit. Typical Rahman touch is there in the interludes (he is even going back to his 90′s style in between). Other trademarks like layered violin, techno sounds etc are also in store. Verdict after first listening? This could be another ‘also ran’ song.

Madhurakku Pokathadee…Archit, Benny, Darshana

We are going back to Tamil folk here. With very imaginative lyrics, PA Vijay is demanding equal credit in this song. With apt renditions and suitable orcharstration, it is giving the required rural feeling. This song is not in-line with the deviated path Rahman was following off-late in Guru, RDB or SOK, instead more inclined to the once descarded 90′s style. Has a lot of similarities with ‘Kummi adi’ from SOK, though.

Nee Marlyn Manroe..Benny, Ujjayanee

The biggest foot tapping number of the album. This could be the most popular song after ‘Ellapugazhum’. Benny is going to be the newest hot property in town. Ujjayanee joins him with such an effortless singing style, which is a joy. It will just leave you wonder how easy it is for Rahman to drag you in to dance floor time after time. Just wondering why Blaze was overlooked though. Or is it now Blaze’s turn for the hibernation? Remember Karthik, Srinivas…

Ponmagal Vanthaal…Azlam, Embar

They say it is a remix, I do believe that since I dont have any knowledge about old Tamil songs. Though it is not a bad effort (as Pokkiri), it is not as brilliant as ‘Thottaal poo malarum’ also. The techno stuff seems to be forced into it as Rahman ran out of ideas. Anyway, better than other run-of-mill remixes.

Valayappatti…Madhumathi, Naresh Iyer, Ujjayanee

A semi-classical song with an impressive start. Different from his usual style, Naresh sings kinds of sings openly in this song. It has got a good rythm and as amazingly (as usual) interlaced tavil, maddalam and nadaswaram as background.

Overall, not a bad effort from Rahman. Considering that he is doing this for a comercial Vijay movie, this effort deserves a pat. Just wondering when he is going to stop such stuff forever, though!

No doubt…life is unfair some times. But how long you can go, how much you can take? There should be a limit for everything. However, that does not look to be the case for cricket bowlers. There are so many ways to punish them already. Not satisfied with any of those things, another version of the idiot’s game is here…named twenty-20 ( I don’t know why first ‘twenty’ is written in letters and second in numbers, anyway!).
Watching these matches (or mis-matches) are really a pain. I don’t feel like anyone can take these games serious. Ability and calibre of a team does not make a huge impact in the outcome of the game. It is all about brash and crazy hitting. People come and try to bang-bang from the word go..and they say that is the way to entertain people! I don’t buy that.

To have the game some respect, there should be a minimum level of balance between the bat and the ball. What is happening here is completely different. One cannot even believe what these guys are upto. Some want to hit a six in every ball…if you have watched the South Africa-Bangladesh game, you will understand what I am talking about. I admire Ashraful. If he became
the captian of the team at such a young age, it’s got to be something with talent. But look what he was trying to do today…came to bat, first ball six, second ball four and then third ball again he tried to six! (and of course, got out). I seriously think that twenty20 is going to ruin a lot of good cricketer’s careers.
